CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Miami rowing team finished third in the seventh annual Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship Saturday on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
Improving on their fourth place finish in 2005, the Hurricanes finished third with 34 points behind champion Virginia who totaled 60 points and runner-up Duke who totaled 43 points. Virginia, who swept all four races, has won the ACC Championship each of the seven years it has been held.
In an overcast morning, Miami finished third in the Varsity 8 and fourth in the Varsity 4, Junior Varsity 8 and Novice 8.
In the first race of the morning, the Varsity 4, the UM crew of Jessica Martin (Cox), Mackenzie Dove, Marenda Chamberlin, Charlotte Hillery and Taurii Coyne finished fourth in a time of 7:49.6 behind Virginia, Clemson and Duke.
The Novice 8 likewise came in fourth after crossing the finish line in a time of 7:13.8 ahead of Clemson and behind Virginia, Boston College and North Carolina.
Miami’s Junior Varsity 8 came in fourth behind Virginia, Duke and Boston College in a time of 6:57.7. The Hurricanes finished ahead of crews from Clemson and North Carolina.
In the headlining event of the day, Miami’s Varity 8 crew of Laura Comeau (Cox), Sarah Conlon, Kelly Amsler, Laura Cordner, Laura Coltman, Natasha Lejer, Emy Huntsman, Bethany Krawec and Rachel Clausing came in third behind Virginia and Duke in a time of 6:39.1. Miami finished ahead of fourth place Clemson, fifth place North Carolina and Boston College who rounded out the field in sixth place.
Miami placed two student-athlete’s on the 14-member All-ACC team. Junior Laura Coltman and senior Rachel Clausing earned the honor for the first time in their careers.
The Hurricanes return to action when they Friday, April 28 when they host Duke and Central Florida at the Krome Avenue Quarry.
