Hurricanes Host Duke and Barry Friday at the Krome Avenue Quarry
April 27, 2006
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team will host Atlantic Coast Conference rival Duke and cross-town rival Barry in a three-race regatta held on the Krome Avenue Quarry Friday, April 28. The Varsity 8 will race at 8:00 a.m. followed by the Junior Varsity 8 at 8:15 a.m. and the Varsity 4 at 8:30 a.m.
“This Friday’s race is a very valuable opportunity for us to keep sharp and race some strong opponents,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “Our regional championship isn’t for another few weeks, so this week’s race is a great way to keep our speed going and keep in touch with racing.”
The Hurricanes return to action after finishing third with 34 total points at the ACC Championships held in Clemson, S.C. last Saturday. Miami’s Varsity 8 came in third while the Junior Varsity 8, Novice 8 and Varsity 4 finished fourth, respectively.
The Hurricanes will face tough competition in the Blue Devils who finished second in the ACC Championships with 43 total points despite not racing a Novice 8 boat. In a close sprint for the finish, Duke narrowly came in second behind Virginia’s Varsity 8 boat.
“Duke had a very strong performance at the ACC Championships so we certainly have a tough challenge ahead of us,” said Morgan. “Regardless, we’re ready for the fight and are feeling confident about being able to step up to that challenge.”
