UM Impressive at the XXXIX Head of the Charles Regatta

The University of Miami Women’s Varsity Eight placed 33rd out of 40 boats, and the Women’s Youth 8+ placed 14th out of 55 boats at the XXXIX Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass.

The Varsity Eight team of sophomore Laura Comeau (cox), sophomore Ashley Marincsin (stroke), senior Jenny Krawec, senior Jacqui Julien, senior Caroline Stuart, senior Ananda Chou, junior Deirdre Curran, sophomore Aoife Forde and senior Jordanna Heywood (bow) finished in a time of 17:29.805.

London Training Center won the event with a time of 15:31.082, while the the top college crew was Yale University which finished fourth in a time 16:08.259.

The UM Youth Eight team consisting of freshmen Meghan Leydecker (Cox), Karen Wiley (stroke), Sarah Conlon, Valerie Webb, Laura Coltman, Alicia Alamar, Ashley Via, Molly Wilson, and Marenda Chamberlin (bow) finished with a time of 18:11.839.

“I’m very pleased with the performance of both our crews today. They took huge steps over the weekend and put together some great races. We look forward to finishing the fall season on a very strong note at the Head of the Hooch and Florida Fall Regatta,” said Head Coach Debra Morgan.

The XXXIX Head of the Charles Regatta started over 39 years ago and has developed into the world’s largest regatta. The two-day event features over 7,000 athletes from around the world competing in 21 races and attracts up to 300,000 spectators. The prestigious Champ Eight event featured the top collegiate teams in the country, as well as national teams from the United States, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands.

The Hurricanes return to action November 1-2 when they travel to Gainesville, Ga. to compete in the Head of the Chattahoochee.
