Hurricane Invitational Regatta and Boat Dedication Ceremony

Hurricane Invitational Regatta and Boat Dedication Ceremony

March 10, 2004

The University of Miami rowing team will host the First Annual Hurricane Invitational Regatta on Saturday, March 13 at the Ronald Shane Watersports Center on Indian Creek in Miami Beach, Fla.. Preceeding the race, on Friday evening, March 12, will be a dinner and a boat dedication ceremony.

The regatta will mark the Hurricane’s season opener and is one of only two home events for Miami. Other schools scheduled to compete are Barry University, Central Florida, Connecticut, Loyola Marymount, Nova Southeastern, and West Virginia.

“The unique aspect of this event is that we will be racing a series of dual races rather than racing all of the competitors in one race,” said Head Coach Debra Morgan. “This will give our crews the opportunity to come down the course several times and adjust our race plan as needed .”

Three boats are set to be christened at the dedication ceremony. The first is for Kirk Landon, who has been very generous in his donations to the rowing program as well as to the athletic department and the university as a whole. The second boat will honor David Wyman, the team’s academic advisor, for his hard work in helping student-athletes achieve in the classroom. The final boat will be named for Victor Ishmael, the team’s strength coach, to acknowledge his assistance in the weight room.

Friends and family of the Miami rowing team are invited to attend the dinner and dedication ceremony for a $10 contribution. All of the festivities will be held at the Shane Watersports Center.

“The Hurricane Invitational is an exciting way to start off the season as we will be racing crews from all over the nation,” said Morgan. “We have trained hard through the winter and are ready to start the season with a bang. We have an extremely strong group of athletes this year so we are eager to see what they can do.”
