
Derrik Kerns, a native of Anthon, Iowa, joined the University of Miami in June 2025 as a Sports Physical Therapy Resident, primarily working with the Hurricanes football team.
Derrik earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Creighton University in 2025. During his time at Creighton, he worked with the university’s baseball team throughout the 2024 season and provided athletic training support at several major events, including the Men’s College World Series and the USA Wrestling Senior World Team Trials. In early 2025, he completed a six-week clinical rotation with the Cleveland Guardians during the Major League Baseball spring training.
Before pursuing his DPT, Derrik served as an athletic trainer at Iowa Central Community College, where he worked with the baseball, volleyball, and wrestling programs. His role included injury prevention, rehabilitation, and on-field coverage.
Derrik holds a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Iowa State University, where he gained experience with the Cyclones football and women’s soccer teams, as well as at Ames High School. He is a licensed Athletic Trainer (ATC) and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Outside of the clinic, Derrik enjoys life in Miami with his wife, Cara. Together, they enjoy being outdoors, exploring new places to eat, and spending time with their Golden Retriever, Stetson.
