BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Miami Hurricanes wrapped their Virginia road trip Sunday, earning a 3-0 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies. The victory marks Miami’s 14th straight win over the Hokies and first sweep of an opponent since Oct. 4.

With the win, the Hurricanes move to 11-10 on the season and 9-3 in ACC play.

Ruth Martinez and Sonja Danilovic had ten kills each to lead the Hurricanes offense. The pair also combined for 16 digs and four blocks.

Ariana Rodriguez recorded 37 kills and ten digs while defensively, Gaby Arroyo recorded 13 digs, and Denitsa Angelova led the way with four blocks. The freshman also added six kills and impressed throughout the match, specifically in the second set when she accounted for four straight Hurricanes’ points.

Set 1: Miami 27, Virginia Tech 25
The Hurricanes opened a 4-1 lead on the Hokies in the first set before Virginia Tech battled back to take an 8-6 lead. Miami began to chip away pulling within one thanks to kills from Denitsa Angelova and Ariana Rodriguez, but a 5-1 Hokies run put them on top 14-9.

Miami scored the next three points to make it a two-point game, but Virginia Tech took the 15-12 lead into the media timeout.

Out of the break, the Hurricanes recorded the next six points, capped by two straight aces from Sonja Danilovic. The Hokies battled back however, retaking a one-point lead over Miami. From then on, neither team built larger than a one-point lead until the Hurricanes scored three straight at the end of the set to earn the 27-25 first set victory.

Set 2: Miami 25, Virginia Tech 17
Virginia Tech scored points early in the second set to maintain a lead over the Hurricanes, but four straight points including back-to-back Angelova kills gave Miami a 6-4 lead. It held on to the lead going on runs of four straight and five straight points to take a 15-6 lead into the media timeout.

Angelova continued to impress on the Hurricanes 4-0 run, accounting for all four Miami points; recording two kills, a solo block, and a block assist.

Trailing 15-6, the Hokies would score six of the next ten to trail by seven. Three straight Miami points though put the Hurricanes back up by nine to force a Virginia Tech timeout.

The timeout helped the Hokies, as they scored the next three points, but the Hurricanes held on to win the second set.

Set 3: Miami 25, Virginia Tech 18
The Hokies wasted no time in the must-win third set, opening a 7-1 lead over Miami. Despite the deficit, the Hurricanes went on a 9-2 run to take a one-point lead, thanks to three kills and a block by Asia Harvey.

The teams traded points to sit tied at 11, before four consecutive Hurricanes points gave Miami a 14-11 lead. Virginia Tech pulled within one, but Billie Reiter, making her first appearance since Sept. 12 at St. Thomas, served five consecutive times, recording a service ace to help Miami to a six-point lead.

Miami just outscored the Hokies down the stretch, 6-5, seeing kills from Danilovic, Harvey, Martinez, and two from Logan Wiley, as the Hurricanes defeated Virginia Tech 25-18 in the third set and earned their third sweep of the season.
