CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its volleyball weekly awards, Monday, naming Ruth Martinez the ACC Freshman of the Week. Martinez earns the recognition for the second time this season, also taking home the honor on Sept. 21.
The freshman led Miami to two more ACC wins this past weekend as the Hurricanes earned a four-set win over Wake Forest on Friday and swept the NC State Wolfpack on Sunday. Miami is now 5-8 overall, 3-1 in ACC play and riding a three-match win streak.
Against the Demon Deacons, Martinez recorded 21 kills at a .342 hitting percentage, tallying her most kills against a conference opponent this season. She also led the team with four blocks and added ten digs for her first collegiate double-double.
On Sunday, she notched 12 kills to once again lead the Hurricanes. Martinez added one assist, five digs and three blocks in the three-set win over the Wolfpack.
Through 13 matches, the freshman sits atop the team with 133 kills at 3.33 per set, 54 of which have come against the ACC (3.86 per set). Martinez ranks third on the team with 60 digs and second with 28 total blocks.
The Hurricanes will continue conference play and wrap a five-match homestand this weekend, hosting Clemson and Georgia Tech. Miami will first face the Tigers on Friday, Oct. 9 with first serve set for 7 p.m.

Ruth Martinez tallied 33 kills this weekend, hitting .309 and averaging 4.71 kills per set to help the Hurricanes to wins over Wake Forest and NC State.
