CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes volleyball team continued a five-match home stand, Friday, hosting the Wake Forest Demon Deacons for another ACC matchup.
Miami won the first two sets, including playing from behind in the second to go up 2-0. Wake Forest controlled the third set and held on despite a late Hurricanes push to force a fourth, trailing two sets to one. Miami impressed in the fourth, earning the 25-15 set victory to defeat Wake Forest 3-1.
The Hurricanes improve to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in ACC play, extending their win streak inside Freeman Indoor Stadium at the Knight Sports Complex to four.
Ruth Martinez, Sonja Danilovic, and Asia Harvey all tallied double digit kills in the win, with Martinez recording 21 at a .389 hitting percentage. Ariana Rodriguez added four kills and tallied 40 assists, capping her performance with six service aces.
Defensively, Martinez also led the way with four blocks, followed by Denitsa Angelova with three.
Set 1: Miami 25, Wake Forest 17
Wake Forest built a small lead early in the first set, but Miami was able to chip away, tying the set at eight. The Hurricanes then built a lead, making it a 12-9 game on a Ruth Martinez block. From then on, the Hurricanes would not falter, building as large as an eight-point lead to take a 22-14 advantage thanks to a Logan Wiley block. Martinez scored the final three points of the set for the Hurricanes, putting Miami up 1-0 in the match.
Set 2: Miami 27, Wake Forest 25
The Demon Deacons opened a lead in the second set, continuing to bounce back after Miami pulled closer. The Hurricanes tied the set at five, before Wake Forest slowly pulled away to take a 15-10 lead. Wake Forest held its lead at five until a service error and Ariana Rodriguez ace pulled the Hurricanes within three. Trailing 19-16, momentum shifted in favor of Miami.
The Hurricanes scored five straight points, recording blocks from Martinez and Denitsa Angelova as well as kills from Martinez, Asia Harvey and a unique dig from Gaby Arroyo that caught Wake Forest off guard, giving Miami a 21-19 lead. The two teams battled back and forth as Wake Forest took a 24-23 lead and a 25-24 lead, but Miami scored the final three points, capped by another Rodriguez ace to claim the second set.
Set 3: Wake Forest 25, Miami 22
The third set swung Wake Forest’s way early, as the Demon Deacons opened a 7-1 lead on the Hurricanes. Each team added six points, before Miami scored three straight to pull within four, forcing a Wake Forest timeout. The two teams continued to battle, including a Miami push late thanks to kills from Harvey and Martinez, making it a 23-20 game in favor of Wake Forest. With the Demon Deacons holding on to set point, Miami scored two straight to pull within two, but Wake Forest defeated the Hurricanes in the third set, 25-22.
Set 4: Miami 25, Wake Forest 15
In a pivotal fourth set for the Hurricanes, both teams were on their game early. Tied at four, Miami went on an 8-0 run to open a 12-4 lead, seeing three kills from Martinez, two from Sonja Danilovic, and one from Lal Akin, seeing game action for the first time in three weeks. Miami led by ten at the media timeout, enough to defeat the Demon Deacons 25-15, as each team scored ten points down the stretch of the fourth set.
