Soccer

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team registered a 3-1 victory over Iona on Sunday at Cobb Stadium.

With the victory, the Hurricanes move to 9-3-2 on the year while Iona falls to 5-7-2.

“I think there were a number of players on our roster that stepped up in big ways today and we  had Carlie Wysocki scoring her first college goal," head coach Ken Masuhr said. "I was thrilled to see Avarie Gonzalez get her first college start and victory today as well. There were some moments that we will want to look at and improve upon, but it was good to see us score three goals and get the win in front of our fans and our alums. In a weekend where we welcomed back our alums, and specifically our 2001 team, we were happy to show what their support means to us and the program. This week we will look prepare for a top matchup with Boston College on Cobb this Friday night!”

Miami opened the scoring in the 41st minute as Carlie Wysocki registered her first goal of the season. The freshman corralled the clearance just outside the top of the box and launched a volley in the corner of the net.

Iona was able to even the match at 1-1 in the 48th minute as Natalia Arango was able to take advantage of a deflection off Miami goalkeeper Avarie Gonzalez following her save on a Marissa Graziano attempt on net.

The Hurricanes were able to retake the lead in the 74th minute as Cisel Akgül slotted home a cross from Kambryl Armstrong. Miami doubled its lead four minutes later as Armstrong curled it past the keeper as Madelynn Sadusky registered an assist.

Gonzalez registered four saves in net as the freshman made her first career start and played all 90 minutes.

The Hurricanes outshot the Gales, 15-7, as Miami tallied nine shots on goal to Iona’s five. The Canes earned nine corners while Iona was held to none.
