Volleyball

Ruth Martinez claimed her third ACC Freshman of the Week nod after a 46 kill weekend, while Ariana Rodriguez was named the ACC Setter of the Week, her first recognition this season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Monday, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its volleyball weekly awards, recognizing two Hurricanes.

Ruth Martinez was named the ACC Freshman of the Week for the second time in as many weeks, earning her third honor of the season, while Ariana Rodriguez was named the ACC Setter of the Week. This is Rodriguez’s first weekly award of the season and eighth of her career.

In a 3-1 win over Clemson on Friday, Martinez led the Miami offense with 23 kills at a .409 hitting percentage. She also recorded a service ace, six digs and ranked second on the team with five blocks. Her 23 kills were just three shy of her career high but is the most she’s scored against an ACC opponent this season.

Rodriguez tallied 52 assists to set a new season high against the Tigers. She added six kills, hitting .556, with four service aces, bumping her into second all-time in program history for service aces in a career. Rodriguez also tallied eight digs and two blocks.

The outside hitter-setter pair continued to impress in a five-set win over Georgia Tech on Sunday. Martinez recorded another 23 kills with a .356 hitting percentage, adding a service ace and six digs. She finished the weekend with 46 kills, a .382 hitting percentage, 12 digs, two aces, and five blocks.

Martinez has now led Miami in kills in five consecutive matches, recording double digit kills in each. With 179 kills to lead the team, she is one of only four freshmen in the ACC to lead their team in kills.

To beat a season high 52 assists set on Friday night, Rodriguez tallied 57 in the five-set battle with the Yellow Jackets. The setter also 19 digs, a career high, for her fifth double-double of the season. She rounded out her stat line with two kills and two service aces, bringing her just three away from setting a new program record.

In two games, Rodriguez posted eight kills, 109 assists, 27 digs, six aces, and five blocks.

With two wins last weekend, Martinez and Rodriguez helped Miami improve to 7-8 overall and 5-1 in ACC play. The Hurricanes also extend their win streak to five overall with seven consecutive wins on their home court.

Miami will be back in action this weekend, hitting the road for the first time this October. The Hurricanes will continue ACC play at No. 5 SMU on Friday, Oct. 16 before taking on No. 2 Pitt on Sunday, Oct. 18.
