Hurricanes Fall to UCLA in Home Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team battled but ultimately fell to UCLA, 3-0, Friday at Freeman Indoor Stadium at the Knight Sports Complex.

Asia Harvey and Ruth Martinez led the way for the Hurricanes offense as Harvey led the match with 12 kills as Martinez added 11. In her season debut, Ariana Rodriguez added 34 assists and a pair of blocks.

Set 1: UCLA 25, Miami 20
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams were tied at seven before the Hurricanes (0-3) went on a 7-2 run capped off by an Ariana Rodriguez kill forcing the Bruins to call a timeout. UCLA (3-1) responded with a 13-4 run to take a 22-18 advantage before the Hurricanes responded to cut the lead to two. The Bruins won the set with a pair of aces by Mija Bendziute.

Set 2: UCLA 25, Miami 20
UCLA led early, 6-5, before going on a 5-0 to extend the lead to six. The Hurricanes battled back, embarking on a 5-0 run to trim the lead to one at the media timeout. Out of the break, the Bruins extended their lead to 19-14 as the Hurricanes battled to cut the lead to two. UCLA answered to extend its lead to four before taking the last two points to win the set.

Set 3: UCLA 25, Miami 23
The two teams battled to open the third set with the game tied at 10-10 before UCLA took a 15-13 advantage at the break. The Hurricanes came out of the timeout with back-to-back points off a Danitsa Angelova kill and an ace from Ella Thompson to tie the set. Miami took the lead, 17-16, on a Ruth Martinez kill and an attack error. The Hurricanes held a 23-21 lead after a red card was distributed to UCLA’s bench before the Bruins ended the match with four-straight points.
