STANFORD, Calif. – After seven months of waiting, it was finally time to play football again.

And when the seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes took the field at Stanford Stadium for their season opener on Friday, it didn’t take long for them to show why they have the potential to be one of the more exciting teams in college football.

Sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney, the reigning ACC Rookie of the Year, picked up right where he left off last season and had both a career and record-breaking night. Quarterback Darian Mensah delivered a brilliant performance in his first start as a Hurricane and Miami's defense kept the Cardinal from ever truly finding a rhythm - or the end zone.

The ultimate result? A 45-6 win for the Hurricanes on a night in which they seemingly felt no ill effects after a 2,565-mile cross-country trek from Coral Gables to California.

"Really proud of our players for coming across the country and staying in preparation and staying focused and certainly efficient and productive on both sides of the ball,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said. “Certainly some things that you want to clean up, a couple different looks that were a little bit muddy, that we had a couple of issues with. But I think as the game went on, we rectified those things and certain players stepped up in the absence of others.”

The win marked the 20^th straight game in which Miami has scored at least 20 points, and it didn't take long for those points to start piling up.

Miami (1-0, 1-0 ACC) needed just four plays on its opening possession to find the end zone, taking a quick lead when Mensah connected with Toney on a 23-yard scoring play.

"You can’t draw it up any better. That’s what you want,” Mensah said. “You want to go out and punch a team in the mouth and we did that."

The two would connect again on the Hurricanes’ second drive of the game, this time on a 2-yard scoring play that pushed Miami’s lead to 14-3 after the extra point by Jake Weinberg.

"That just comes from our practices out there on Greentree,” Toney said of how quickly he and Mensah have established their on-field timing. “Before we go 1-0 out here, we have to go 1-0 on Greentree. So, I just felt like we just put on display what we’ve been working on Greentree."

Toney and Mensah combined for another score in the third quarter and on that 47-yard touchdown that pushed Miami’s lead to 42-6, Toney set a new Miami single-game receiving record, surpassing the mark of 220 yards set by Eddie Brown against Boston College in 1984.

"It means a lot, knowing how many greats played at this University,” said Toney, who finished with 12 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns. “Just for me to be the player to break that record … it just means a lot, thanks to our Lord and Savior."

Meanwhile the quarterback who got Toney the ball all night had a career showing himself.

Mensah, who led the ACC in passing last season, completed 27 of 30 passes for a career-high 401 yards with five touchdowns. He has now completed at least one touchdown pass in 19 straight games, the longest such streak among FBS signal callers.

Against Stanford, Mensah also became just the second quarterback in program history to throw for more than 300 yards in his Miami debut, following in the steps of Cam Ward who threw for 385 yards in a 41-17 win over Florida in 2024.

"Just a dream come true, to be honest,” Mensah said of wearing a Miami uniform for the first time. “Like I said earlier, I’m just blessed to be in the position that I’m in and it feels like it’s just an honor to be the quarterback of this team."

Adding to Miami’s gaudy offensive numbers Friday were receiver Cooper Barkate, who finished with four catches for 67 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown grab in the third quarter, and running backs Mark Fletcher Jr. and Marty Brown, who combined for 77 yards, with Brown also scoring a touchdown.

In all, Miami totaled 549 yards in the win, averaging 8.2 yards per play and 12 different Hurricanes caught passes from either Mensah or fellow quarterback Luke Nickel, who entered the game in the fourth quarter.

The defense, meanwhile, limited Stanford (1-1, 0-1) to just a pair of field goals and held the Cardinal to just 299 yards.

Marquise Lightfoot paced the defense with a team-high nine tackles, while Mohamed Toure added five tackles and Zechariah Poyser and Kellen Wiley Jr. had four tackles each.

"I’d say it was just the standard of our defense,” Lightfoot said of Miami’s ability to keep the Cardinal out of the end zone. “We knew what we came in working for and we accomplished it. Still a lot more work to do, but I’m glad we got our feet wet and left with a dub."

With the season opener now behind them, the Hurricanes will refocus – quickly.

Miami will take the field at Hard Rock Stadium for its home opener on Thursday against Florida A&M, with kickoff set for 8 p.m.

And even before leaving Stanford Stadium, the Hurricanes were already looking forward to the next matchup on their schedule.

"Yeah, it feels good to 1-0. We preach it all the time,” Mensah said. “Short week coming up, home opener. [It’s] going to be exciting. … Just ready to get back to work.”
