CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes volleyball team hosted the Florida State Seminoles for its second ACC matchup of the season and first inside Freeman Indoor Stadium at the Knight Sports Complex, Sunday. Miami battled throughout the match, including erasing an eight-point deficit in the third set to defeat the Seminoles, 3-0.

With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 3-8 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

Ruth Martinez led the way for Miami offensively, tallying 15 kills and adding four blocks in the win. Setter Ariana Rodriguez recorded 33 assists while Denitsa Angelova served three aces and led the team with five blocks. Fellow freshman Stalena Van Deusen also had three service aces.

Set 1: Miami 27, Florida State 25
Miami jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the first set, capitalizing on blocks and kills from Ruth Martinez and Asia Harvey as well as a block from Denitsa Angelova. The Seminoles outscored Miami 8-1 over the next nine points to take a two-point lead before eventually building as large as a three-point lead at 17-14. The Hurricanes tied the set at 18, but the Seminoles took the lead again, leading 21-19, 23-21 and 24-23. Three Martinez kills sent the Hurricanes to set point, before Harvey sealed the 27-25 set one victory for Miami.

Set 2: Miami 25, Florida State 20
The second set was tight early, as the teams’ traded points and leads. With the set tied at 12, Martinez notched a kill and Angelova placed a service ace to give the Hurricanes a two-point lead, the largest lead of the set to that point. Miami built its lead to three and eventually six thanks to four straight points from Martinez and Harvey, making it a 22-16 game. Florida State cut the lead in half, scoring three straight points to make it 23-20, but the Hurricanes got a block from Angelova and Sonja Danilovic and a kill by Logan Wailey to win the set.

Set 3: Miami 25, Florida State 23
The Seminoles dominated the beginning of the third set, opening a 7-2 lead on the Hurricanes. Miami pulled within two points twice before Florida State went on another run, scoring five straight to take a 14-7 lead. The Hurricanes got two kills from Danilovic and an Angelova block, but the Seminoles reached 15 first to force the technical timeout. Both teams traded points out of the timeout as Florida State continued to hold on to its now six-point lead.

Trailing 19-13, the Hurricanes found another gear. Harvey recorded a kill and Angelova added another block to force a Seminoles timeout as they held a 19-15 lead. Out of the timeout, Angelova recorded a kill and Olivia Durst a service ace to cut Florida State’s lead to two and force Seminoles Head Coach Lindsay Allman to take another timeout. Harvey got the kill out of the timeout to make it a one-point game, but Florida State stopped the 5-0 Hurricanes run to make it 20-18.

Miami continued to push, scoring five straight including back-to-back Angelova and Danilovic blocks to take a 23-20 lead over the Seminoles, its first lead of the set. Florida State stopped the Hurricanes momentarily, pulling within one, but Miami sealed the sweep on a Danilovic kill for its first conference win of the season.
