TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes volleyball team traveled to Florida State to face the Seminoles in the 2026 ACC opener, Wednesday, suffering a five-set loss.

The Canes fall to 2-8 on the season and 0-1 early in the conference schedule.

Florida State impressed in the first set, but the Hurricanes battled back to take both the second and third set to lead the match 2-1. Despite a late Miami lead, the Seminoles pushed to win the fourth set and tie the match. The Hurricanes held an early lead in the fifth, but Florida State battled back to earn the victory.

Miami was led by Denitsa Angelova’s 11 kills and five blocks. Three Hurricanes also recorded double-digit digs defensively; Gaby Arroyo (23), Sonja Danilovic (11), and Ariana Rodriguez (10). Rodriguez added five kills and a .545 hitting percentage and tallied 33 assists.

Set 1: Florida State 25, Miami 14
The Hurricanes took an early 4-2 lead to open the match, but the Seminoles powered back, outscoring Miami 7-1 to take an 8-5 lead. Miami pulled within one thanks to two Florida State errors to make it an 8-7 game, and came within two points again at 11-9, but the Seminoles controlled the rest of the set, outscoring the Hurricanes 14-5 to take the first set, 25-14.

Set 2: Miami 25, Florida State 22
Despite Florida State taking the first point, Miami powered back to score six straight points with Stalena Van Deusen behind the line, taking a 6-1 lead. The Hurricanes and Seminoles traded points, before Miami went on another run, this time recording five straight to make it a 13-4 game. Florida State started to chip away, pulling within five, but Miami rebuilt its lead to nine, taking a 19-10 lead on a Denitsa Angelova kill. With the Hurricanes holding on to a 22-14 lead, the Seminoles outscored Miami 8-3 to cut into the lead, but it was able to hold on to take the second set and draw even in the match.

Set 3: Miami 25, Florida State 22
The third set was close early, as the largest lead either team held was three-points when Miami led 8-5. With the set then tied at 10, the Hurricanes went on a 7-3 run thanks to kills by Ruth Martinez and two by Ella Thompson to take a 17-13 lead. The Seminoles once again made a push, pulling within two multiple times, but the Hurricanes secured the third set victory.

Set 4: Florida State 26, Miami 24
Florida State got out to a quick start in the must-win set for the Seminoles. The Hurricanes took an early 2-1 lead, but Florida State scored six straight points to erase the deficit. After trading points, Miami scored three straight, capped by an Asia Harvey kill to pull within one. Florida State recorded two straight kills before two errors and a kill from Logan Wiley tied the set at 10.

As the set continued, Florida State built small leads that the Hurricanes erased, battling back to tie the set multiple times before eventually pulling ahead 19-18. Miami held its lead at 21-19, but the Seminoles stayed alive scoring seven of the last ten points to win the fourth set 26-24

Set 5: Florida State 15, Miami 11
Miami wasted no time to begin the 15-point fifth set, opening a 5-2 lead. Four service errors between the two teams across the next eight points gave the Seminoles an 8-7 lead and forced a Miami timeout. Another service error out of the timeout pulled the Hurricanes even, but Florida State went on to score four straight to go back in front.  The Canes pushed until the end, including challenging the match point, but the Seminoles completed the comeback to defeat the Hurricanes.
