CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Monday, the ACC announced its players of the week, recognizing Ruth Martinez as the ACC Freshman of the Week. Martinez had a breakout weekend for the Hurricanes, helping Miami defeat LSU and RV Tulsa for its first two wins of the season.

Martinez posted a career performance on Thursday versus the Tigers, exploding for a season and career high 26 kills at a .315 hitting percentage to pace the Miami offense. Through the first set, Martinez had already tallied 11 kills to match her season high. She also led the team with four service aces and ranked second with six blocks, accumulating 33 points.

Her kills and point total landed her two spots in the Miami program record book. Martinez’s 26 kills rank tenth all-time in program history in a four-set match while her 33 points is good for fifth all-time in four sets.

The freshman continued to lead the way for Miami in Saturday’s match against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. She was tied for both the team high with 10 kills and 3 blocks alongside fellow freshman Denitsa Angelova, while leading the way with five service aces.

Martinez’s five aces in a three-set match is tied for eighth all time in program history while as a team, the Hurricanes recorded 13 service aces, good for fourth all time in three sets.

Through nine matches this season, Martinez ranks second on the Hurricanes with 79 kills at 3.04 kills per set and 15 blocks. She holds the team lead with 12 service aces as she claims her first ACC weekly honor.

The Miami Hurricanes open ACC play this week, taking on Florida State on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. before hosting the Seminoles in Coral Gables on Sunday, Sept. 27.
