CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami volleyball cruised to an impressive three-set win over Tulsa Saturday at Freeman Indoor Stadium at the Knight Sports Complex, wrapping the Canes Classic and earning its second straight win over the Golden Hurricanes in as many seasons.

With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 2-7 overall and 3-1 all-time against Tulsa.

After a career-best match on Thursday against LSU, freshman Ruth Martinez led the Miami offense again, posting ten kills, five service aces, and three blocks. Fellow freshman Denitsa Angelova matched Martinez, recording a career-best ten kills and adding three blocks of her own.

Martinez’s five aces adds her name to the Miami program record book for the second straight match, as she sits tied for eighth all time in aces in a three-set match. Additionally, Ariana Rodriguez recorded four aces while three more players notched at least one, giving the Hurricanes 13 as a team, a metric that ranks them fourth all-time in program history in a three set match.

Set 1: Miami 25, Tulsa 15
The Miami Hurricanes took an early 3-0 lead in the first set, as Ariana Rodriguez kicked off the match with three straight service aces. Tulsa then settled in, eventually recording an ace of their own to cut the Miami lead to one. Ruth Martinez went on to score back-to-back points, including one of her team leading five aces to regive the Hurricanes a three-point lead. After trading points, Miami built its lead to seven thanks to five straight points, capped by Rodriguez’s fourth ace of the set. Tulsa got two points back, but Miami outscored the Golden Hurricanes 11-6 down the stretch to win set one.

Set 2: Miami 25, Tulsa 20
Miami opened the second set on a 4-1 run, seeing kills from Sonja Danilovic and Martinez, as well as a Martinez block and another ace, this one from Gaby Arroyo. Tulsa pulled itself within one, but back-to-back kills from Asia Harvey and one from Denitsa Angelova built the Hurricanes’ lead back to four. After trading points, Miami scored four straight, making the score 12-5. The Hurricanes continued to build their lead, growing it to nine before Tulsa started to chip away. With Miami leading 18-9, Tulsa strung together runs of back-to-back points, outscoring the Hurricanes 11-7, but Miami won the set on a Martinez ace to put itself up 2-0.

Set 3: Miami 25, Tulsa 15
Tulsa controlled play early in the third set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Hurricanes battled back, scoring four straight to take a one-point lead. The Golden Hurricanes tied the set at four, but Miami went on a 9-0 run, forcing two Tulsa timeouts to take a 13-4 lead. Arroyo had served eight straight times before an error gave the ball to Tulsa. Leading 13-5, the two teams went on to play a near even set, as Miami only outscored the Golden Hurricanes by two the rest of the way, but it proved to be enough to earn the three-set victory over Tulsa.
