CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Vivien Muchuruza scored twice in the second half to lead the University of Miami soccer team to a 2-1 victory over SMU in its ACC opener Friday night at Cobb Stadium.

With the win, the Hurricanes improved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 5-2-2 and 0-1 in the ACC.

Miami controlled the offensive opportunities throughout the contest, holding a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Hurricanes also earned five corner kicks compared to three for the Mustangs.

The Hurricanes applied pressure early, forcing SMU goalkeeper Aubrey Brown to make a pair of saves on attempts from Madelynn Sadusky during the opening 32 minutes. Miami outshot the Mustangs, 3-1, in the first half, but the teams entered the break tied at 0-0.

Miami continued to apply offensive pressure after halftime. Alessia Saia placed an attempt on frame in the 51st minute before the Hurricanes were reduced to 10 players following a red card in the 58th minute on Crosby Nicholson.

Despite playing one man down, Miami broke through in the 65th minute. Goalkeeper Atlee Olofson connected with Muchuruza, who found the back of the net to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 advantage.

Muchuruza doubled Miami’s lead in the 79th minute, converting from the penalty spot for her second goal of the night and the season.

SMU responded in the 84th minute with a late goal to cut Miami’s advantage to one, but UM maintained the lead to close out 2-1.

Atlee Olofson played all 90 minutes in goal for Miami, recording one save and one assist.

The Hurricanes will now get on the road and play at Virginia on Thursday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET with coverage on ACCNX.
