CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Former University of Miami standout Yohandy Morales has been called up to the major leagues by the Washington Nationals, the organization announced Tuesday.

Morales becomes the 73rd Miami Hurricane to reach the major leagues and the fifth in the last two years.

Morales joins Washington following a breakout season with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings. The 24-year-old infielder batted .286 with 25 home runs, 76 RBI and 82 runs scored across 104 games. He added 19 doubles and finished with a .363 on-base percentage, a .519 slugging percentage and an .882 OPS.

The Nationals selected Morales in the second round with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft. He reached Double-A during his first professional season before advancing to Triple-A in May 2025.

A Miami native, Morales started 174 games he played during his three seasons with the Hurricanes from 2021-23. He posted a .343 career average with 237 hits, 43 doubles, six triples, 49 home runs, 174 RBI and 167 runs scored. 

His 49 home runs rank fifth in program history, while his 439 total bases are third. Morales also finished his collegiate career with a 1.048 OPS.

Morales’ standout season came in his junior year in 2023. The third baseman hit .408 with 98 hits, 20 home runs and 70 RBI while recording a 1.187 OPS. He earned Second Team All-America honors from Perfect Game and was selected to the All-ACC First Team.

Morales also earned Freshman All-America and ACC All-Freshman Team honors in 2021 before collecting All-ACC Second Team recognition as a sophomore.
