W. Tennis Falls Short to No. 5 UNC
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (13-5, 8-3 ACC) came up short 4-3 to the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels (22-2, 10-1 ACC) on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
UNC earned the top two court in doubles to secure the opening point. Raquel Gonzalez and Sebastianna Scilipoti fell 6-0 to No. 5 Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton, while Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Sofia Rocchetti dropped court two, 6-4, to Oby Kajuru and Maddy Zampardo.
Daria Volosova and Dominika Podhajecka notched court three, 6-3, over Tatum Evans and Anna Frey before doubles ended.
Singles opened strong for Miami, taking the first set on five courts. UNC took court one first, 6-2, 6-3 from No. 2 Brantmeier over No. 36 Gonzalez. The Hurricanes then took back-to-back courts on two and four to tie it up.
Rocchetti, ranked No. 105, earned her highest ranked win with a dominant 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 11 Kajuru, while Scilipoti took down No. 93 Hamilton on court four. UNC’s Zampardo then took court five over No. 116 Podhajecka, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, before Ogunwale earned her highest ranked win against No. 31 Evans on court three.
Down to the final court, Volosova fought hard but fell 6-3, 4-6, 2-6 to Theadora Rabman on court six. The Hurricanes are back on Sunday for senior day against Duke.
