Canes Open Season With Strong Showing at Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Hurricanes rowing team opened the season with a strong showing during the first day of racing at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational, highlighted by the first varsity eight’s first-place finish during the afternoon session.

The 1V8 crew of Scarlett Pringle, Naroa Zubimendi Varela, Jovana Stanivuk, Samantha Premerl, Mallory Sullivan, Esther Fuerte Chacón, Candela Martinez Pernas, Maria Sole Perugino and Beatrice Ravini Perelli posted a time of 6:27.9 to earn a win over Alabama, North Carolina and Navy during the final race of the day.

It was the fastest time of any boat during the afternoon session and both the first varsity eight and the second varsity eight improved on their respective times from earlier in the day.

Miami’s third varsity eight opened the day with a second-place finish and a time of 6:58.8 to best both No. 19 Duke and Wisconsin in the Hurricanes’ first race of the day. The 1V8 closed out the Hurricanes’ morning session with a time of 6:32.6 and a second-place photo finish just behind the ranked Blue Devils, who posted a time of 6.32.0.

Miami’s three other boats posted also second place finishes during the morning session, with the second varsity four and second varsity eight posting additional second place finishes in the afternoon.

“That was a positive start to our 2026 campaign against some tough competition,” Hurricanes head coach James Mulcahy said. “There were some ups and downs, but we’re very pleased with how the crews stayed focused and intent on their own performances. Tomorrow, we will race excellent competition again, and we’re looking forward for the opportunity to get better.”

Miami will be back in action on Sunday morning for more racing on Melton Lake. The Hurricanes’ first race of the day is scheduled for 8:40 a.m.
