Miami Falls Short to No. 25 UCF, 4-2
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (3-2) fell, 4-2, to the UCF Knights (4-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Miami fell short of the doubles point despite Daria Volosova and Maria Vargas dominating court three, 6-1, over Jade Psnoka and Lauren Seye. On court two, Sofia Rocchetti and Aely Arai battled back but fell 3-6 to Daryna Shoshyna and Hannah Rylatt.
Coming down to the top court, Dominika Podhajecka and Raquel Gonzalez came back from a 3-0 deficit to take the lead 4-3, but ultimately fell 7-5 to Jantje Tilbuerger and Marina Gatell.
Minutes into singles, court four for UCF retired due to injury, giving Miami a point to tie it up at one-all. Gatell then added another point for UCF with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ela Plosnik, before No. 73 Gonzalez tied it up again for the Hurricanes after a 6-4, 6-1 win over Shoshyna.
The Hurricanes continued to battle but Rocchetti fell on court two, 3-6, 2-6, to Tilbuerger, while Volosova fell 4-6, 3-6 to Psnoka on court six to clinch it.
When play was abandoned, Podhajecka was up 7-6 (6), 2-2 on court five over Seye.
The Hurricanes will start conference action on the road on Feb. 20 and 22 against Notre Dame and Louisville, respectively.
