Miami Falls to South Carolina in Opening Round
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (1-1) fell, 4-1, to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Miami fell short of the doubles point as Dominika Podhajecka and Raquel Gonzalez dropped the top spot, 3-6, to Kaitlyn Carnicella and Taylor Goetz. As Ela Plosnik and Aely Arai were only down 4-5 on court two, Sebastianna Scilipoti and Maria Vargas fell, 3-6, to Jane Dunyon and Jana Sojanova on court three.
The Gamecocks earned the first singles win as Arai fell 3-6, 3-6 to Helena Buchwald at the No. 2 spot. Immediately after, Daria Volosova put the Hurricanes on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court six over Sojanova. On court three, Plosnik dropped the match 4-6, 3-6 against Sara Borkop, while Goetz clinched the South Carolina win over No. 101 Scilipoti on court four, 6-2, 7-5.
When play was abandoned, No. 100 Gonzalez was down 5-7, 4-5 at the top court and Podhajecka was in a close 6-3, 3-6, 3-4 battle at the No. 5 spot.
The Hurricanes will return home to face FIU on Jan. 30.
