Miami Reverse Sweeps No. 19 UNC
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 13 ranked University of Miami volleyball team (26-5, 16-4 ACC) reverse swept the No. 19 UNC Tarheels (21-8, 14-6 ACC), 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Carmichael Arena.
The Hurricanes tallied 68 kills, 13 blocks and a season-high 77 digs. Senior Flormarie Heredia Colon led with 36 kills with a program-high 92 attempts, while Rodriguez and Wilson notched seven blocks each and Naylani Feliciano added a career-high 30 digs.
UNC held an 12-8 lead after a 5-1 run despite Wilson picking up a pair of kills. The Hurricanes climbed back for a 7-2 run with three kills and an ace from Heredia Colon to be within three, 17-20. As the Tarheels fought to close the set, Miami secured three straight points but dropped it, 25-20.
The Hurricanes bounced back in set two, opening on a 5-0 run with three straight kills from Heredia Colon, but the Tarheels hung in to keep it tied at 13-all. Jazmin Vergara then picked up back-to-back kills to take the lead, while Wilson and Heredia Colon factored in swings to lead 23-21. UNC went on a 4-0 run to come back and earn the set, 25-23.
Miami started on a 14-8 advantage with kills all around the court, highlighted by a kill and block from Amina N’Diaye immediately after joining the match. UNC then earned a 6-0 run to lead before Vergara tied it at 19-all with her seventh kill. Heredia Colon secured the set with three more kills to keep the Hurricanes alive, 25-23.
Set four opened with a strong Miami presence as Vergara and Wilson picked up two kills each for the 12-7 lead. The Hurricanes maintained the lead as Heredia Colon notched her 27th kill for the 18-12 lead. With 17 kills, Miami forced a fifth set with a 25-20 set win.
The final set saw Miami with an 8-5 lead and maintained it with two more kills from Heredia Colon to secure the final set, 15-10.
The Hurricanes will await the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday for a spot in the tournament.
