Hurricanes Defeat Top 25 Tar Heels Thursday Night at Home

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team secured its first ACC win of the season, defeating the 2024 national champions, No. 23 North Carolina, 2-1. The Hurricanes top 25 win was secured Thursday evening in their final home game of the 2025 season.

With tonight’s victory, Miami holds an overall record of 7-8-2 and stands at 1-7-1 in ACC play. The Hurricanes win over No. 23 UNC also marks their first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 15 Clemson 3-2 on Oct. 24, 2019.

North Carolina now stands at 10-6-0 overall and 4-4-0 in ACC competition.

“I am thrilled about our program’s performance tonight, as we’ve been fighting for a result like this all season,” head coach Ken Masuhr said. “So many players stepped up in their moment and made plays. As the game progressed, it was clear we drew energy from every tackle, won header, and individual 1v1 battle. When given the chance to make a big play, this group rose to the challenge. A huge thank you to our incredible fans for their unwavering support at Cobb Stadium this year. It’s great to be a Miami Hurricane!”

The Hurricanes kept the top ten ACC team scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play. Miami’s Atlee Olofson had her second season start and played the entire 90 minutes in net, securing two saves in the first half.

Teegan Melenhorst put Miami on the scoreboard with her first collegiate goal, assisted by Moira Flynn in the 50th minute of play. UNC tied the game 1-1 when Linda Ullmark scored off an assist from Kate Faasse and Olivia Thomas in the 67th minute.

The Hurricanes’ second and final goal of the match came from Cisel Akgul in the 76th minute, marking her first of the season and securing Miami’s 2-1 victory and anchoring the upset at Cobb Stadium.

The Canes will go on the road for their final game of the regular season and play Virginia Tech on Oct. 30. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Blacksburg and the conference matchup will be streamed on ACCNX.
