Canes, Mustangs Battle to Scoreless Draw

DALLAS, Texas – The University of Miami women’s soccer team battled homestanding SMU to a 0-0 draw Sunday at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.

The Canes (6-4-2 overall, 0-3-1 ACC) earned their first point in conference play this season. The Mustangs improved their record to 7-3-2 overall and 1-1-2 in ACC play.

“We are pleased to earn a result and our first point in ACC play,” head coach Ken Masuhr said. “We would have preferred three points as we felt stronger for most of the match but are satisfied with a point on the road. This was our third road match in ACC play out of our first four and I couldn’t be happier with how the team fought for each other and for Miami after the setback on Thursday. We look forward to the challenge ahead as we prepare for our next opponent this week.”

Miami goalkeepers Emily Bredek and Atlee Olofson combined for a clean sheet, the Canes’ sixth shutout of the season.

One season after combining for six goals in a 3-3 draw in Coral Gables, the Canes and Mustangs managed just three shots on goal between them Sunday. SMU forward Liz Eddy hit the crossbar in the 74th minute and Olofson tipped a shot by Mustangs forward Sammy Nieves off the post in the 83rd minute to preserve the shutout.

The Canes next travel to Tallahassee on Friday, October 3, to face Florida State. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
