Canes Beat VCU to Wrap Up Non-Conference Play
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Miami soccer team defeated VCU 2-0 Thursday night at Sports Backers Stadium.
Miami improved to 6-3-1 on the season, while the Rams fell to 2-5-2.
“I enjoyed watching the team compete tonight,” head coach Ken Masuhr said. “We scored two goals that came from the very foundations of our program and it was rewarding to see so many players contribute tonight. We led in almost all of metrics we follow and earned a clean sheet. Thank you to our alumni for the hospitality. It was wonderful to have so many Canes in Virginia. We will take the next few days to recover, support our fellow student-athletes, and prepare for our next opponent.”
Midfielder Ciara Alarcon had a goal and an assist, and Lauren Rodriguez recorded three saves and a clean sheet – Miami’s fifth shutout of the season.
The Canes controlled play from start to finish, recording a 15-4 advantage in shots, including six shots on goal.
Alarcon scored on a cross from forward Brie Severns in the fourth minute to give the Canes an early lead. It was her third goal of the season. Miami doubled its lead in the 55th minute as defender Éabha O’Mahony scored off an assist from Alarcon.
Miami continues ACC play next Thursday, September 25 at Louisville. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
