Canes Fall 3-1 at No. 17 Wake Forest
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest scored two goals in the game’s opening five minutes and held on for a 3-1 win Wednesday night over Miami in the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s soccer opener for both teams.
The 17th-ranked Demon Deacons improved to 6-1-1. The Canes fell to 5-2-1.
Lola Ressler scored just 1:06 into the contest and then followed with another tally in the fifth minute to give Wake an early two-goal cushion.
Miami’s Cisel Akgül appeared to cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute but video review overturned the goal for offsides. The Deacons then stretched their lead to three goals when Allie Flanagan scored from close range at the 66:04 mark.
In the 73rd minute, Noelle Simmons scored her second goal of the season off a rebound to get the Canes on the scoreboard. But the Deacons closed out the contest from there.
Miami returns home Sunday to host Duke at Cobb Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
