Canes Fall 1-0 at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – The University of Miami soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, dropping a 1-0 decision to Appalachian State.

Miami fell to 1-1, while the Mountaineers improved to 2-0.

The Canes outshot App State 16-5, but the Mountaineers were awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute and Ellie Garrison buried it in the right corner to score the game’s only goal.

Forwards Teegan Melenhorst and Nanaka Inaba paced Miami with three shots a piece. Goalkeeper Anna Claire Jacobi made six saves for the Mountaineers.

“The sign of a good team is one that can turn in two gritty performances on a weekend and get results,” head coach Ken Masuhr said. “We played one of those today. Credit to (App State head coach) Aimee (Haywood) and her group as they battled hard in front of a great crowd and it was too much for us. Despite leading in almost all the stat lines, there is only one that matters and we fell short.”

Next up for the Canes is their home opener Thursday night against FAU at Cobb Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

“There are lessons to be learned from this weekend and quickly because we have a hungry FAU team coming to Cobb Stadium for our home opener,” Masuhr said. “I think this team has something about them and I am looking forward to their response.”
