Canes Defeat Bulldogs to Open 2025 Campaign
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The University of Miami soccer team opened its 2025 season Thursday night with a 1-0 win at UNC Asheville.
Miami (1-0) scored the game’s only goal in the seventh minute, when forward Moira Flynn took a feed from midfielder Ciara Alarcon and fired a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper for her first career goal.
The Canes outshot the Bulldogs (0-1) on their home turf 15-7. Goalkeepers Emily Bredek, a transfer from Old Dominion, and Atlee Olofson, a transfer from Notre Dame, combined to record a clean sheet in their first appearances for Miami.
“I’m proud of the resilience in this group,” head coach Ken Masuhr said. “Playing with 10 for 83 minutes and still playing on the front foot is the type of mentality I hope our teams have for years to come. We will use the next few days to recover as we prepare for a very good team in Appalachian State. Go Canes!”
Miami went down to 10 players at the 7:25 mark after midfielder Crosby Nicholson received a red card.
The Canes are now 16-10-2 all-time in season openers. This was the first meeting between the schools.
Next up for the Canes is a Sunday road test at Appalachian State. Kickoff is 1 p.m. on ESPN+. This marks the first time since 2016 that Miami has opened a season with consecutive road games.
