THE HURRICANES ARE SUPER ONCE AGAIN

For the 13th time in program history, and the first since 2016, the Miami Hurricanes are headed back to the NCAA Super Regionals after edging top-seeded Southern Miss, 5-4, in a thrilling winner-take-all contest Monday night at Pete Taylor Park.

Right-hander Will Smith (3-0) earned the win after tossing three innings of one-run ball in relief, striking out four and allowing just one hit. Starter Reese Lumpkin allowed one run across 3 1/3 innings, while Rob Evans and Brian Walters combined to close the door.

The Canes caught fire in the Hattiesburg Regional, going 3–1 as the No. 3 seed. They upset No. 2 seed Alabama 5-3 in the opener, then pounded Columbia 14-1 to reach the regional final. After getting beat 17-6 by host No. 16 Southern Miss in the first final, Miami bounced back the next day with a 5-4 thriller over Southern Miss to clinch the regional title. It marks Miami’s first NCAA Super Regional berth since 2016 and the 13th in program history.

Miami capitalized in high-leverage moments throughout the Hattiesburg Regional. In the winner-take-all final against Southern Miss, leadoff hitter Jake Ogden broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning. Later, closer Brian Walters surrendered a two-run homer that brought the Golden Eagles within one, but the veteran right-hander regrouped and secured the tense 5-4 win in the ninth.

J.D. Arteaga, in his second year as head coach, returns the program to national prominence and could become the second fastest Miami skipper to reach the College World Series (Jim Morris, 1994, Morris’s first season)

THE DESTINATION IS THE SAME: OMAHA

Miami made its second straight trip to the College World Series in 2016, marking the program’s 25th all-time trip to Omaha, Neb.

Miami’s 25 College World Series trips are the second-most of any program in the country. The Hurricanes have won 48 games in the College World Series, the fourth-most of any program; Miami’s four national championships rank fifth most.

Since the NCAA began awarding national seeds prior to 1999, Miami has been among the top eight in eight seasons: 1999 (#1), 2001 (#2), 2003 (#8), 2004 (#3), 2008 (#1), 2015 (#5), 2016 (#3) and 2022 (#6).

KEEP ON CRUSHIN’ IT, CUVET!

Sophomore slugger Daniel Cuvet enters the Super Regional with 17 home runs and 81 RBI — the sixth-most RBI in a single season in Miami history. The power-hitting third baseman leads the Hurricanes in nearly every major offensive category and carries a 1.170 OPS into the weekend.

The Fort Lauderdale native continued to swing a scorching bat in the Hattiesburg Regional, slashing .385/.556/.692 with a 1.248 OPS across four games. Cuvet racked  up five hits, five RBI, five runs scored, and four walks, including a home run and two doubles. Cuvet reached base in 9 of 17 plate appearances and was named the regional’s Most Valuable Player.

Cuvet has been red-hot over the last 10 games, hitting .405 (15-for-37) with 12 RBI, 11 runs scored, and seven extra-base hits — including three doubles and three home runs. He posted a 1.261 OPS during that stretch, reaching base in nine of the 10 games and drawing seven walks while striking out just five times.

CUVET TAKES MVP, HUGUS AND GALVIN EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT

Daniel Cuvet, Griffin Hugus and Max Galvin were each named to the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional All-Tournament Team following standout performances.

Cuvet led the Hurricanes with a 1.248 OPS, hitting .385 with five RBI, five runs, and a home run across four games.

Hugus delivered a complete-game gem in Miami’s win over Columbia, striking out nine in a complete game 123-pitch effort.

Ciscar earned the victory in the regional opener against Alabama, tossing seven strong innings with eight strikeouts while allowing just three runs.
