Miami Kicks Off Outdoor Campaign at Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami track and field team began its outdoor season Friday at the Hurricane Invitational at Cobb Stadium.

Matthew Thomas registered the team’s first win of the outdoor campaign in the 3000m with a time of 8:44.98 as Nico Valentine placed second at 8:45.76 and Luke Suliman finished third at 8:49.99.

Heath Vernor started the meet off strong as he recorded the fourth-best mark in school history in the hammer throw at 61.83m. Desmond Coleman followed suit as he posted the fifth-best throw in school annals at 59.68m.

Vernor capped off his day with a second-place finish in the discus with a throw of 48.45m.

Jovana Micic posted a runner-up finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.93m, while Alyssa Perkins established a lifetime best jump of 5.84 to place fourth. In the women’s discus, Calea Jackson finished third with a mark of 45.18m.

In the women’s 3000m, Emma Hencock (10:09.28) and Lexi Arambulo (10:21.66) placed second and third, respectively.

Miami returns to the track Saturday with the javelin at 10 a.m. before the 100m hurdles at noon. Admission to the meet is free.
