Campre in Third; Grissom Qualifies for 800m Final on First Day of NCAA Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Edgar Campre sits in third place in the heptathlon and Gabriella Grissom advanced to the 800m finals Friday to highlight day one of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Campre is in third after the first four events of the heptathlon with 3,292 points. The Lisbon, Portugal, native clocked the third-fastest time in the 60m with a season-best mark of 6.89 before recording a season-best distance of 7.17m in the long jump.

Campre led the field in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 15.50m before clearing 1.88m in the high jump.

Grissom advanced to Saturday’s 800m final after qualifying on time at 2:02.14. Grissom placed fifth in her heat and was in seventh entering the final 200m before finishing the last lap with a split of 30.97, the third-fastest on the track.

Solomon Strader nearly missed the 400m final as he placed ninth in the prelims with a time of 46.47 to earn second team All-America honors.

Campre returns to the track at 9:30 a.m. for the 60m hurdles. The heptathlon pole vault is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. with the event wrapping up with the 1000m at 2:30 p.m.

Grissom’s 800m final is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
