Miami Tops FGCU, Earns First Midweek Win

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball (8-1) team earned their first midweek win of the season after defeating FGCU (4-4), 14-6, Wednesday evening.

RHP Reese Lumpkin (1-0) earned his first win as a Hurricane after tossing a career-high nine strikeouts. A transfer from Winthrop, Lumpkin threw six innings while giving up two earned runs and five hits.

The Hurricanes once again started the game with offensive fireworks. Designated hitter Bobby Marsh tallied two RBI by driving in Daniel Cuvet and Max Galvin in his first at bat of the game in the first inning.

Miami found more success off FGCU starter Jordan Vera (0-2), with Tanner Smith able to bring in Marsh with a double of his own to put Miami ahead 3-0 in the first.

Even though the Eagles were able to tally a run in the next inning, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. and Cuvet added two insurance runs that boosted Miami’s lead to 5-1 after the second.

Marsh, with a team-leading 19 RBI, added four more to his total – two coming from a home run in the fourth that sailed 372 feet to right center field. The Miami offensive attack would continue to pour it on by scoring three more runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Lumpkin was in control from the outset, needing just 95 pitches to get through six impressive innings. Ryan Ashford, Alex Stanyek, AJ Ciscar and Brixton Lofgren combined to pitch the final three innings.

Another home run – this one from Jake Ogden in the bottom of the eighth, helped seal the victory.

Miami continues its season with an annual rivalry series at Florida Feb. 28 – March 2. First pitch for Friday’s series opener is set for 6:30 p.m.
