Hurricanes Take Game One of Saturday’s Doubleheader
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team (5-1), took game one of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Princeton Tigers (0-2), 10-3
The reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week, Griffin Hugus (2-0), struck out nine Tigers across six innings of work, surrendering a two-run home run in the first inning.
Looking to strike back, the Hurricanes responded in a big way during the third inning.
Todd Hudson, who battled through a lengthy 10 pitch at-bat, doubled to spark life into the Miami offense. A walk by Michael Torres and single from Daniel Cuvet brought up Max Galvin to the plate. Max Galvin, who went 3-for-3 on Friday night, hit a shallow single to bring in Hudson, keeping the bases juiced for Jake Ogden.
Seeking his first RBI this season, Ogden delivered a 350-foot grand slam to launch Miami back into the driver’s seat, 5-2. Ogden finished game one 2-for-4 with five RBI.
However, the Hurricanes weren’t done yet. Designated hitter Bobby Marsh was able to bring in Dorian Gonzalez Jr. with a single of his own, and Derek Williams, registered a sacrifice fly to bring in Tanner Smith, catapulting Miami to a 7-2 lead.
With Hugus keeping the Princeton bats at bay, Miami added on to their lead in the sixth. Max Galvin was able to drive in two runs from an extra-base hit while Ogden returned to the plate to bring in Galvin with a double of his own, making the lead 10-2.
Game two of Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. and can be viewed on ACCNX or listened to at WVUM 90.5.
