CLEMSON, S.C. — Highlighted by Maddie Scheier’s record-breaking performance in the mile, the University of Miami track and field team opened competition at the Tiger Paw Invitational on Friday at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.

Scheier broke the school’s 20-year-old record as she clocked a 4:45.82, besting Melanie Schultz’s time of 4:46.81 set on March 5, 2005. Scheier’s new mark bettered her personal-best by nearly three seconds.

Josh Jones narrowly missed on breaking the men’s mile school record by six one hundredths of a second as he improved his second-best time in program history, clocking a 4:05.89. Cormac O’Brien etched his name in the program record book, posting the third-best time at 4:10.71.

In the women’s weight throw, Calea Jackson won the event with a personal-best throw of 19.80m. On the men’s side, Heath Vernor improved his fourth-best performance in program history with a throw of 19.45m.

Solomon Strader closed out the day for the Hurricanes with a personal-best time of 46.18 in 400m, improving his second-best mark in program history.

The Hurricanes return to the track Saturday for the final day of competition at the Tiger Paw Invitational at 9 a.m.
