Hurricanes Wrap Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team wrapped up its first spring event of the season with the Miami Spring Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes notched seven wins on the weekend in singles and doubles against NC State, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.

On the first day competition, Miami opened play in singles vs. the Wolfpack, as freshman Jaquelyn Ogunwale took down Mia Slama, 7-5, 6-2, while junior Xinyi Nong grabbed the 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Maddy Zampardo.

Following singles, freshmen Savannah Webster and Aely Arai defeated Emma Staker and Ava Catanzarite, 6-1, to highlight doubles action.

Day two of the tournament for the Hurricanes kicked off in doubles against Vanderbilt, where Ogunwale and Nong grabbed the 6-3 win over Bridget Stammel and Valeria Ray, while junior Raquel Gonzalez and sophomore Maria Paula Vargas won 7-6 (4) over Sophia Webster and Trinetra Vijayakumar.

Miami then faced the Sooners in singles and picked up two wins. Ranked No. 70, Gonzalez took down No. 43 Alina Shcherbinina in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, and Arai notched the 6-2, 7-6 (5) battle over Chloe Noel.

The final day of the Miami Spring Invite started slow for the Hurricanes, as they dropped all three doubles matches.

The Hurricanes are back in action as they start the regular season in Boca Raton, Fla., against FAU on Thursday, Jan. 16. Their first home match will be on Saturday, Jan. 18 vs. FIU.
