Miami Dominates Palm Beach Atlantic in Exhibition Contest

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team defeated the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, 89-30, in an exhibition contest Sunday afternoon at the Watsco Center.

Graduate student Haley Cavinder recorded a double-double with 13 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds, while four other Hurricanes scored in double-figures on the afternoon  – graduate student Natalija Marshall (13), freshman Leah Harmon (13), graduate student Hanna Cavinder (12) and graduate student Cameron Williams (10).

As a team, Miami put on a defensive showcase, totaling 22 steals in the contest and holding Palm Beach Atlantic to a 25.0 percent shooting effort.

The Sailfish scored the first bucket of the game, but it was all Hurricanes after that as Miami put together a 24-0 run over the final minutes of the eight minutes of the first quarter. Altogether, Miami outscored Palm Beach Atlantic, 45-11 in the first half and outrebounded the Sailfish, 24-11.

Nine different Hurricanes recorded a basket in the second half of action, led by graduate student Hanna Cavinder who tallied nine second-half points. The Miami defense limited Palm Beach Atlantic to 19 points in the final 20 minutes to secure the 89-30 victory.

The Hurricanes open their season on Nov. 4 when they host the Stetson Hatters at the Watsco Center. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game will air on ACC Network Extra.
