Rodriguez Earns Triple-Double in Miami’s Five-Set Victory Over Duke
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Miami volleyball team (14-6, 5-4) took the five-set win over the Duke Blue Devils (8-12, 4-5) on Friday night in the Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Hurricanes notched 56 kills, 67 digs, 12 blocks and eight aces. Redshirt freshman Ariana Rodriguez earned a triple-double with 12 kills, 16 digs and 24 assists, along with six blocks.
Set one started with a tight race to 25, with Duke leading 15-12 after 11 kills. Miami tried to find the rhythm in set one and cut the deficit to 23-17, but Duke prevailed to take the opening set, 25-18.
Rodriguez got things rolling for the Hurricanes as she earned three-straight points for the Hurricanes to lead 8-7. Miami continued to push forward after a 5-0 scoring run following back-to-back aces from sophomore Grace Lopez for the 13-7 lead. Despite the comfortable 17-8 advantage, the Blue Devils came back to only trail 24-21, before Miami notched set two after four blocks, 25-21.
The beginning of set three started tight as well, tied at nine-all until Miami tallied eight kills to lead 15-14. Heredia Colon tallied her 16th kill, while Junior Dalia Wilson picked up her fourth block to help the Hurricanes take set three, 25-20, after only three hitting errors as a team.
The entirety of set four was tight, with constant back-and-forth leads. Heredia Colon and Rodriguez earned double-doubles in kills and digs to help Miami lead 16-15. The Blue Devils then took the lead, 22-19, following their 11 kills and two blocks and eventually forced a fifth set, 25-23.
Miami started with a 4-2 lead in the final set, before Duke claimed the advantage, 8-7. The Hurricanes went on a run to lead 12-8 and ultimately claimed the set, 15-11.
The Hurricanes will face No. 25 UNC on Sunday, Oct. 27 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
