CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami head coach J.D. Arteaga announced Monday that Chris Dominguez will be joining the staff as an assistant coach.

“Chris is one of the best young coaches in our game,” Arteaga said. “Having played at the highest level in the Major Leagues, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program. Chris grew up at The Light rooting for the Hurricanes and will help mold the next wave of Canes baseball greats. I’m looking forward to his impact on the growth and development of our student-athletes.” 

Dominguez returns to The U after spending the past three years at Bellarmine, including the last two seasons as head coach. The Miami native previously worked as an assistant for the Hurricanes during the 2021 campaign.

Following a standout career at Louisville, Dominguez played 11 years of professional baseball (2009-19), including stints at the big-league level with the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds.

“This is one of the most prestigious programs in college baseball, and I am so happy to be a part of such a great tradition,” Dominguez said. “I get to teach the game I love to some of the best players in the country, and I get to do that in my hometown. The mission is to bring a fifth national championship to Coral Gables, and I believe J.D. is the one to get us there.”

Over 1,000 games, Dominguez totaled a .263 average with 134 home runs and 592 RBI.

In 2010 — his first full season in pro ball — he notched 21 homers and drove in 101 runs with the Augusta GreenJackets, the Class-A affiliate of the Giants.

Three years later, Dominguez slugged 21 homers and stole 21 bases for Triple-A Fresno.

Prior to being chosen in the third round by the San Francisco Giants in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Dominguez rewrote the Louisville record books.

The third baseman was tabbed a two-time All-American and guided the Cardinals to their first-ever appearance in the College World Series in 2007.

As a rookie that season, he smashed 15 home runs and tallied 61 RBI, garnering Freshman All-America Honorable Mention honors. Dominguez was selected as the MVP of the Columbia Regional and followed by launching three homers in the CWS.

In 2008, Dominguez was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year honors and received third-team All-American distinction after batting .365 with 21 home runs and 75 RBI.

As a redshirt junior in 2009, he recorded a .345 average, 25 homers and 82 RBI, earning BIG EAST Player of the Year recognition and first-team All-America plaudits.

Coming out of Gulliver Prep High School, Dominguez was chosen in the 17^th round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He was also taken in the fifth round in 2008, before ultimately signing the following year.

Dominguez and his wife, Shannon, have two kids, Patrick and Murphy.
