Miami Drops 3-1 Battle to Wright State
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 20 University of Miami volleyball team (5-2) fell, 3-1, to the Wright State Raiders (6-2) Saturday afternoon in the Covelli Center.
Miami notched 62 kills, 49 digs and eight blocks, with sophomore Grace Lopez leading the team with 14 kills and junior Dalia Wilson leading with five blocks.
With an early 8-3 lead from Wright State, Miami battled to keep it close. The Raiders went up 17-11 after a 3-0 run, but Miami continued to fight as junior Flormarie Heredia Colon earned a solo block to cap off a 3-0 run. Miami held the Raiders to set point for three points, but fell, 25-22.
The Hurricanes came out slow in the second, with the Raiders leading 12-8 and maintaining it throughout the set. Despite Miami hitting .419 as a team, Wright State took set two, 25-20.
Miami turned a corner in set three, storming to an 8-2 lead. Going on a 5-2 run, the Hurricanes notched four kills to lead 15-7. With a block from Wilson, Miami continued to hold the lead and claimed its first set in a dominant fashion, 25-17.
Set four was tight to start, until Wright State went on a 5-0 run to lead, 13-7. Chipping away, the Hurricanes went on a 4-0 scoring run to only trail 16-17. The Raiders never backed down and secured the set, 25-22, and the match.
The Hurricanes will remain in Columbus, Ohio, to face Buffalo tomorrow for their last road match before conference season.
