Hurricanes Go Undefeated in Texas
DENTON, Texas – The University of Miami volleyball team (3-0) went undefeated in its first weekend of the season at the UNT Invitational, defeating the North Texas Mean Green (0-3), 3-0, Sunday evening at The Super Pit.
Miami totaled 48 kills, 49 digs, five blocks and eight aces to secure its victory over UNT. Junior Heredia Colon was named Most Outstanding Player, while Ava Carney and Grace Lopez earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
The Hurricanes came out strong early in the first set, taking a 7-3 lead with five different Canes earning a kill. As UNT battled to keep it close, Miami once again went on a run to go up 18-12 on the Mean Green following an ace and kill from senior Paula Guersching. UNT cut the deficit to 24-21, before junior Flormarie Heredia Colon put it away for the Canes, 25-22.
Set two started tight, with the score tied at nine. Despite the team’s eight kills in their first 13 points, UNT continued to push and grabbed the 15-13 lead. After back-to-back kills from junior Dalia Wilson and Heredia Colon, followed by an ace from Guersching, the Canes ran over to grab the 22-20 lead. Sophomore Grace Lopez sealed the set with her seventh kill, 25-20.
North Texas took a 7-4 lead to open set three. A block from redshirt freshman Bianka Lulic tied the match up at eight-all to give Miami some momentum. The Mean Green then went on a run to lead 17-12, before Lulic notched three kills to even the score at 18-all. As Miami neared to end the set, UNT came back and tied it up at 24, but the Hurricanes closed it out after a block from Heredia Colon and Lulic.
The Canes will travel to Austin, Texas, to face Indiana and No. 1 Texas on Sept. 6 and 7, respectively.
