Campre and Deysel Victorious, Multiple Hurricanes Advance to Saturday’s Finals
ATLANTA, Ga. — The University of Miami track and field team finished day two of the 2024 ACC Outdoor Championships Friday evening at Georgia Tech.
At the end of day two, the Miami men’s team is in fourth 32 points while the women’s team ranks sixth with 23 points. 13 events have yet to be scored for both sides.
Sophomore Edgar Campre stood at the top of the podium for registering 7661 points in the men’s decathlon. Campre, the 2024 indoor champion in the men’s heptathlon, claims his second individual conference championship.
The school record holder in the men’s javelin, Devoux Deysel, bested the competition with a powerful 70.49m (231 feet, 3 inches) javelin throw to claim his first individual conference championship and tallying ten points to the men’s team.
With Deysel’s victory and Deisiane Teixeira winning the women’s javelin Thursday morning, it is the first time since 2003 where a school has swept the event at the outdoor conference championships.
Senior jumper Russell Robinson earned the bronze in an exciting men’s long jump competition. Robinson’s leap of 7.82m (25 feet, 8 inches) boosted the men’s point total by six points.
Miami native Milton Ingraham II had a massive outing in the men’s shot put, throwing a mark of 18.61m (61 feet, 0.75 inches).
Good for a fourth-place finish and five team points, Ingraham II’s toss now ranks as the third-best shot-put throw in outdoor school history.
On the women’s side, Erikka Hill contributed more points to the Miami women’s team by placing fifth in the shot put with a mark of 16.15m (53 feet), good for four team points. Hill contributed 13 total points for the women’s squad, spanned out over three separate events.
Senior sprinter Kennedy Brace and graduate student Makenzy Pierre-Webster will represent the Hurricanes in the women’s 400m event. Brace clocked a season best 52.92 while Pierre-Webster ran 53.24 to win heat three.
Solomon Strader and Ace Malone also earned spots in the men’s 400m as both runners clocked 46.41 in the first heat. Malone’s time ranks him fourth all-time in outdoor school history.
Freshman sprinter Sophie Haag clocked a new personal best 11.58 in the women’s 100m prelims to advance to the finals, while Ashton Torns will represent Miami in the men’s 100m finals after running 10.51. Earlier in the day, Torns jumped a collegiate personal best 7.48 for an eighth-place finish and one team point in the long jump.
Sophomore middle distance runner Gabriella Grissom ran 2:04.93 for the second fastest 800m prelim time, punching her ticket to tomorrow’s finals.
The final day of the ACC Outdoor Championships will begin at 2 p.m. eastern time Saturday with the men’s high jump. Track events are slated to begin at 5 p.m. with the men’s 4x100m relay.
