Miami Knocks Down Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Miami volleyball team claimed its eighth ACC win after defeating Notre Dame, 3-1, Friday night.
Miami (15-6, 8-3 ACC) tallied 50 kills, 54 digs, 48 assists and 10.0 blocks. Freshman Grace Lopez led the team in kills with 22, while sophomore Flormarie Heredia Colon and junior Ashley Carr earned five blocks.
Started 7-1 run with Vach behind the line. The Canes kept the momentum going to push it to 16-8 after 13 digs and 10 kills. After multiple Notre Dame errors, Miami went on to take set one dominantly, 25-13, with a team kill percentage of .393.
Notre Dame came out strong in the second set, but Miami kept with them and didn’t let the deficit go too far. With the Irish leading, 13-11, Carr and Heredia Colon came up with a big block. Notre Dame pulled away again to make it 17-13 until the Canes cut it to 19-18. Ultimately, Notre Dame evened the match after taking the second set, 25-21.
Set three was tight, with points trading back-and-forth. With the score at 17-all, the Irish started to pull away. Graduate student Abby Casiano came up a with set0changing block to make it 23-22, with Heredia Colon following that up with a kill to tie it at 24-all. The set continued past 25 and freshman Grace Lopez delivered the set-sealing block, 29-27.
The fourth set started with a 5-1 run. Miami continued on to make it 16-10 after Casiano and Heredia Colon went up for a big block. The Canes then claimed four kills from Heredia Colon, Lopez and Carr to secure the set, 25-15, and notch the win.
The Hurricanes will remain on the road and face No. 4 Louisville on Oct. 29.
