Miami Sweeps No. 11 Georgia Tech
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Miami volleyball team came out victorious in its first-ranked win of the season, sweeping No. 11 Georgia Tech 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
Miami (12-6, 5-3 ACC) tallied 48 kills, 43 digs, 45 assists and eight blocks. Freshman Grace Lopez earned 22 kills on a .306 hitting percentage and seven digs to claim NCAA’s Big Time Performer honor.
This marks Miami’s fifth shutout of the season, while delivering Georgia Tech its third loss and first sweep.
The match started neck-and-neck, with a seven-all score. Set one continued with back-and-forth action until Miami went on a 4-0 scoring run led by Lopez with back-to-back kills to make it 20-15. Georgia Tech stormed back to tie it at 21-all. Redshirt senior Angela Grieve guided the Canes to a set-one victory with a kill, block, and ace to seal the win, 25-23.
Miami maintained control all of set two, including earning a 4-0 scoring run with help from a Lopez kill, block by Tejada and Grieve and kill from Grieve. Miami totaled 12 kills and four blocks to push the Canes over the top and take set two, 25-20.
Set three started off rocky for the Canes, with the Yellow Jackets taking an early 7-3 lead, but that didn’t stop Miami from pushing through and going up 20-14 in the final set. Georgia Tech closed in with a 6-0 run and tied the match at 20-all. With a kill from Heredia Colon and Grieve and a block from Vach and Tejada, the Canes claimed the 25-24 advantage. Then, sophomore Milana Moisio sealed the victory with an ace, 26-24.
The Hurricanes will return home to face Syracuse and Boston College on Oct. 20 and 22, respectively.
