VB Closes Non-Conference With Back-To-Back Sweeps

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team went undefeated in its last non-conference matchups with Stetson and Jacksonville on Saturday.

Miami kicked off the day with a battle with the Hatters and claimed a 3-0 shutout. Fifth year Savannah Vach got action started with three consecutive aces to put the Canes on a 6-0 run. Stetson battled the Canes all the way to the end, tying it at 25-all after earning six blocks over Miami. Despite Stetson’s comeback, the Canes notched 20 kills to take set one, 28-26.

Set two kept it close until Ashley Carr and Cianna Tejada pulled Miami away. Stetson didn’t back down, ultimately cutting the deficit to 17-16. Peyman Yardimci gained back the momentum for the Canes with a kill to make the lead 20-17 and later secured the set, 25-20.

Stetson gained control of set three, but the Canes bounced back to tie it at 18-all. With 17 digs, Miami took set three, 25-21, and grabbed the sweep over the Hatters.

The Canes returned to the court later that day to face Jacksonville and collected another 3-0 sweep. The Dolphins didn’t hold back against Miami in set one, as the match continuously saw intensity. The Canes racked up 18 digs and 12 kills on a .316 percentage. Sophomore Milana Moisio earned an ace to secure the first set, 25-18.

Jacksonville claimed control of the entire second set until Miami made a 7-0 run with sophomore Flormarie Heredia Colon behind the line. The Canes racked up a .500 kill average to comeback from a 15-21 deficit and take set two, 26-24.

Miami kept the lead throughout the final set. With a .583 average as a team, the Canes took the final set, 25-18. Graduate student Janice Leao and Tejada both picked up back-to-back kills to push Miami over the top. Grieve locked in the win with the team’s ninth ace of the night.

The Canes will begin conference action with a trip to Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, Sept. 22 and 24, respectively.
