Martin Advances in NCAA Singles Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Miami men’s tennis player Dan Martin is moving on in the NCAA Division I Singles Championship after defeating No. 19 Philip Henning, 7-6 (4), 6-4, Monday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.

Martin, the 30th-ranked collegiate men’s tennis player, is now 9-11 against nationally-ranked opponents this season and has tallied four wins over top-25 foes.

The match began outdoors with Martin taking a narrow 4-3 lead before inclement weather forced play to move indoors.

Upon resumption, the graduate student warded off a rally by Henning and ultimately won set one in tiebreak fashion, 7-6 (4).

Neither Martin nor Henning trailed by more than game through the first eight games of the second set, with the match sitting tied at four-all deep into play. However, Martin used his dominant serving to pull away and clinch the match, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

The Laval, Quebec native will face No. 61 Micah Braswell on Tuesday in the round of 32. Times and court designations will be announced after the conclusion of the round of 64.
