Miami Falls, 4-1, at No. 14 Wake Forest
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team (8-6, 0-4 ACC) is still seeking its first ACC victory of the season after falling short of the No. 14 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (16-6, 3-1 ACC), 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
No. 60 Miami’s only point of the day came in doubles action, where the first doubles duo of fifth-year senior Juan Martin Jalif and freshman Martin Vergara Del Puerto and the third doubles pair of sophomore Martin Katz and freshman Antonio Prat each defeated their respective opponents 6-1.
Jalif and Vergara Del Puerto clinched the doubles point for the Hurricanes with a 6-1 win over the No. 30 duo of Filippo Moroni and Juan Lopez de Azcona.
The Demon Deacons took control of the match following doubles play, rattling off four straight singles victories, all of which were two-set contests. Graduate student Dan Martin and Prat dropped their matches against No. 21 Melios Efstathiou and No. 122 Moroni, respectively.
Graduate student Leo Bierbaum was tagged with his first loss in dual match play this season, falling on court four, 4-6, 2-6, while freshman Nacho Serra Sanchez faced a 3-6, 3-6 defeat at sixth singles.
Fifth-year senior Franco Aubone and Katz were both in the middle of two-set battles on their respective courts at the time of clinching.
The Hurricanes return to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday, March 17 to host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. First serve in Coral Gables, Fla., is set for 3 p.m.
