Miami Tallies Fourth Shutout Victory

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team recorded its second win in three days, defeating the Florida Atlantic Owls (5-5), 4-0, on Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes move to 4-2 on the season and all four victories have been shutout wins.

Miami took an early 1-0 lead with a pair of victories at first and second doubles. Graduate student Dan Martin and fifth-year senior Franco Aubone tallied a 6-4 win at second doubles, while fifth-year senior Juan Martin Jalif and freshman Martin Vergara Del Puerto defeated Florida Atlantic’s Nicolas Acevedo and Kevin Huempfner, 6-4, at first doubles.

Martin, the No. 21 player in the nation, doubled the Hurricanes’ lead with the first singles victory of the day for Miami, defeating Acevedo, 6-3, 6-3 at first singles.

Freshman Nacho Serra Sanchez put Miami ahead 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court five and graduate student Leo Bierbaum clinched the match for the Hurricanes at sixth singles, taking down Hunter Robbins, 6-2, 6-4.

At the time of clinching, freshman Antonio Prat and sophomore Martin Katz were in the midst of third-set battles, while Franco Aubone was rallying after dropping set one, 4-6.

­The Hurricanes return to action at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 17 when they host the UCF Knights at 3 p.m.
