Canes Victorious at Head of the Indian Creek

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team began the fall slate of the season on Saturday morning, hosting the Head of the Indian Creek at the Miami Beach Rowing Club. Miami raced against the Barry University Buccaneers in a head race taking home first place in both the varsity eight and varsity four races.

“This morning, nobody rowed through a Hurricane on the race-course and no team was louder cheering on their teammates as they raced by, which is a great way to cap off our Fall Break training,” head coach James Mulcahy said. “I’m really pleased that everyone was able to come off the water not only feeling exhausted and satisfied with their effort, but also knowing they still have a way to go when it comes to building capacity and skill. Thank you to Miami Beach Rowing Club for hosting this event and thank you to all the parents, family and friends who came down to cheer on our crews. Go Canes!”

The rowing team also elected the team captains for the 2022-23 season. The co-captains of the year will be veteran, Mimmi Balaam and sophomore, Emma Tschetter.

“We had eight student-athletes stand for election to be Team Captain for this school-year and I thought that was fantastic that we had so many wanting to take on the role,” Mulcahy said. “I’m very pleased for Emma and Mimmi to represent their teammates as captains. Both are passionate about what this team can accomplish on and off the water this year, and I think the two of them together will bring a great mix of energy and experience, excitement and maturity to the role.”

“We have a much tougher opportunity in two weeks’ time when we head to Alabama to face several Power 5 programs, so now we’re looking forward to getting back into our daily process of using each row to improve ourselves so that we become ready for the next race,” Mulcahy said.

In a few short weeks, the Canes head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face Alabama, Clemson and Louisville in the Head of the Black Warrior River on Oct. 29.
