Swim / Dive Opens Season Saturday vs. FIU
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes open their 2022-23 season on Saturday morning at the Whitten Center Pool in a dual meet against crosstown FIU.
The Hurricanes meet against the Panthers is slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET
The Hurricanes, who were ranked No. 22 in the SwimSwam preseason power rankings, added a talented recruiting class to a returning group that includes an NCAA national champion (diver Mia Vallée) and several veteran swimmers who helped combine for 25 top-10 performances in school history a season ago.
Head swimming coach Andy Kershaw is excited to see his Hurricanes take the blocks against outside competition for an early gauge on an impressive offseason.
“We’re super excited. The team seems to have a very hunger to them,” Kershaw said. “Swimming can be very focused towards March and the postseason, but our team is eager to play the game. Our sport can get so driven on practice, we really kind of emphasize the importance of letting the game drive the practices, and they’ve really embraced it.”
Miami is led by Vallée, who enjoyed a dominant offseason on the international stage, and swimming captains Aino Otava and Zorry Mason
“The top 10s and success last year, it seemed to only make them more hungry,” Kershaw said. “Sometimes you go through that and you feel a lot of satisfaction. In this situation, it put them on the doorstop and had them very hungry to complete that process.”
